Q. Did colonialism bring positive changes in our society?
Colonialism is basically the combination of territorial, juridical, cultural, political, mental, economical and linguistic domination of a group of people on another group of people. When some powers become dominant for ruling or when a group or more groups of people try to become dominant for ruling over another class or group or groups of people in a sense that they controlled these people's culture, language, judiciary, politics, economics is colonialism. The ruling class or group or groups of people are called colonizers while the affected one is called colonized. In this way, a society becomes the mixture of those colonized powers. Britishers ruled over many areas of the world. Among those areas, Subcontinent is also one of the part on which they ruled for 150 years. They introduced so many things in their colonization.
As we know that humans learn from surroundings consciously and unconsciously. In this way, During the time period of colonization powers, colonized people adopted many things from colonizers and after their rules. Now, Most of the revolutionary things, which were introduced by colonizers, brought positive and negative changes in the society after independence.
We people are living in a separate state that is Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Pakistan got independence in 14th of August, 1947. Before that, Britishers were the rulers who ruled over the subcontinent. That time Pakistan was not a separate land but later subcontinent was divided and Pakistan came into existence. Britishers introduced so many things in the subcontinent. So, the question which I am going to answer is that
Did colonialism bring positive changes in our Pakistani society?
Basically the Britishers had left an influential mark which has made/brought positive changes in our society. Those changes came by the introduction of English Language, Western Sciences, Navy, Railways Post and Telegraph system. They introduced these things for their own benefits. The next is English Language and western Education which they introduced for making people "English" in manners. Furthermore, the concept of creating an Army was also introduced by Britishers and they gave special training to the people. Railways helped them in Transportation of raw materials and took goods from one place to another. The Telegraph System and Railways are a faster means of transport and communication respectively. All of these things became beneficial and brought positive changes in our society.
If I talk about the English Language, Britishers introduced it for their benefits but those things have become positive for us.
English allows us to communicate world knowledge and enhances interconnectedness. For example, International news is presented in English. Al Jazeera Media Network changes global news from its Arabic language to the English language in 2005 to reach a wider audience by which we can also be aware of the world events which are going on in the world. A meeting where a Japanese organization will have dialogue with German and Saudi Arabian people If all of them would speak in their Japanese, German and Arabic languages respectively, effective communication would be impossible. So, they use English. By learning English Language, we can be aware of the history as well as the current situation of other countries.
Just think, if they did not introduce that language, we could not learn and we would be only knowing our language, we would not be able to know about the new innovations. We will not be able to communicate with the people to get information. We would be limited. We will not be aware of the happenings around us. So, I believe that colonialism brought positive changes in our society.
